Patriotism
For over 125 years, the DAR has promoted patriotism. It is the foundation of the many DAR activities that take place in our local communities across the country.
Sarah Ann Cochrane Chapter, NSDAR, members participate in a wide variety of activities throughout the year to celebrate patriotism and honor our veterans and service members.
Enlisted service members
For overseas military we send care packages loaded with goodies including items made with love by our members such as:
- Paracord bracelets
- Red scarves for Operation Gratitude
- Helmet liners
- Pocket flags
- Countless cards and letters
- Grocery coupons for families to use at Base/Post Exchange
Over the years our members have also remembered those that have served their country by:
- Volunteering countless hours at local VA hospitals and VFW posts.
- Knitting, crocheting, and sewing hats, scarves, blankets, and distributing packages containing personal care items and goodies for local homeless veterans and those confined to VA hospitals.
- Helping with baby showers for women veterans at VA hospitals.
- Helping with ice cream socials, conducting bingo and other games at VA hospitals.
- Being the Buddy Poppy committee chair.
- Organizing and running fundraising events for veteran and family relief.
- Creating and sending Honor Flight cards.
- Collecting canceled stamps for veterans programs.
Last, but not least, the Sarah Ann Cochrane Chapter, NSDAR, has contributed monetarily to the building of the Fisher House in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The recently opened Fisher House provides a nearby place for the families of patients who are in the VA hospital to stay for free while their loved-ones receive care.
- Honoring public servants by delivering baked goods to area police and fire stations.
- Sewing masks for health care and volunteer workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Each year DAR members dedicate a Day of Service to their community. Past projects have included cleaning the monuments and gardens in the Plymouth War Memorial Park in Plymouth, Michigan and cleaning the graves of service members at Riverside Cemetery in Plymouth, Michigan.
Grave marking and memorial services
The members of Sarah Ann Cochrane Chapter, NSDAR, frequently join with Daughters from other DAR chapters and members of other organizations in honoring fallen soldiers in grave marking and memorial services.
